Sometime during one of the interminable COVID lockdowns, Oobah Butler and I concocted a scheme to get Amazon to pay back at least part of the taxes they’ve evaded over the years, using pothole filler. The pilot for this metastasised into a full, hour-long TV special, co-produced by Abso Lutely and Zandland Films, for Channel 4.
I co-wrote, edited, animated and (mercifully briefly) appeared in the final result; a hybrid docu-heist, falling somewhere between ‘actual journalism’ and Ocean’s 11 pastiche.
We sent Oobah undercover at an Amazon warehouse, where we unearthed a union-busting hiring effort. We collected bottles of their delivery drivers’ urine and turned it into a best-selling drink on the Amazon Marketplace. We also supplied knives to children, racked up an astronomical fine payable to Jeff Bezos, before completing our original mission: tricking them into finally paying their taxes.
One of the more unexpected responses to the film was a load of glowing write-ups for the dick-shaped Prime-ripoff bottle I designed in the legitimate design press, including Creative Bloq, Brand New and Fast Company, who did an entire analysis of it as a piece of marketing. It even appeared in Dieline twice, with a full review and as one of their favourite bits of packaging for 2023.
We are currently developing a sequel of sorts, with more (hopefully) TBA soon.
